Submissions (or How to Sell Your Soul to the Dog)
Dog Horn Publishing is a small press, and so specialises in special limited editions in paperback and hardback formats. We publish a range of genres, but prefer work that tends to the speculative and bizzare. Authors such as Jeff Noon, Kathy Acker and Mark Z. Danielewski would find a great home in us. We also like more mainstream writers such as Jeff VanderMeer, Rhys Hughes, Jeanette Winterson and Angela Carter.
We're a small press so cannot usually offer an advance, but we do promise our writers a 50% share of all net profit from their title. We believe this is the best way to ensure fair compensation for all involved, and more than makes up for the lack of an advance. Also bear in mind these are limited editions, so sales will never be astronomical because we will never print more than 1000 copies of any title we release. But you will have more input than with a larger publisher and your book will be produced to the highest production standards.
At the moment we prefer novellas and short story collections, but we will look at longer submissions as well if you query first.
Genres we accept include: magic realism, literary, alternative history, steampunk, cyberpunk, new wave, new weird, slipstream, avant punk, avant garde, avant fantasy, bizarro, surrealism and absurdism.
We are currently NOT open to poetry, but we ARE open to graphic novels, illustronovellas and art-fiction fusions.
General tips and rules:
- We prefer to see your full manuscript up front, so we can judge it in its entirety.
- We ONLY accept postal submissions. Emails will be deleted unread.
- We prefer closed em-dashes and spaces between periods when using ellipsis (like this . . . ).
- Be consistent with quotation marks. It's surprising how many people get this wrong.
- Please only send one submission at a time.
- You MUST include a marketing plan. We'll help with marketing and do our best, but we're a small press and you'll need to work with us on this.
And that's pretty much it. Send queries to editor@doghornpublishing.com and manuscripts to:

COVER ARTISTS
We are in great need of new cover art. This is a fantastic opportunity to have your art shown to the world and is especially suitable for new artists/designers wanting to build a portfolio.
We tend to publish books in 156mm x 234mm format, and all images need to be 300dpi.
We will accept works that have been printed elsewhere, so long as you own the rights for them, but we prefer new artwork.
Payment will be by negotiation, including two free copies of the book it appears on. Artwork that has appeared elsewhere will typically receive 50% of our going rate.
